Axel is a Scandinavian name ultimately derived from Absalom and usually explained as meaning "father of peace". It feels sharp and modern in English, even though its roots are much older.
The name has long been established in Denmark, Sweden, and neighbouring regions. It later travelled widely because its punchy sound suits modern naming tastes.
